Kaiju Country Model Kit Reviews
I feel that reviews are only worthwhile if they are consistent and as such, I have a set of criteria which I will apply during any miniature review.
Each section is scored separately and contributes to an overall score along with my personal views on the kit. The areas I focus on are listed below:
Look and feel (Score out of 5)
This section is vital to a good miniature as it covers the aesthetics of the miniature and the vibe it gives off. While older miniatures may not look as perfectly sculpted as miniatures which benefit from more modern manufacturing, they often have a lot of personality.
For this reason, it's important that the way the miniature makes you feel is part of the review criteria as a technically beautiful miniature that leaves you cold can be as unsatisfying as one with major sculptural flaws.
Functionality, Cost & Quality (Score out of 5)
This covers how well the miniature achieves its brief as a wargaming mini or display piece. It also looks at whether what you get is durable and of a high enough quality for its purpose versus its cost.
Model kits can vary wildly in cost and quality, so this is always worth weighing carefully.
Kit posing and options (Score out of 5)
I love to convert and adapt miniatures, but I also like to build them straight out of the box with different options and poses. This is frequently an issue for armies or units which re-use single pose miniatures without significant optional changes to make them more individual.
Options are a great way for a company to encourage multiple purchases, but whether this is at the expense of other kit elements such as price should be considered.
Construction (Score out of 5)
For me, construction should be intuitive and satisfying. I love to examine components in advance of the build to work out whether how I'm going to build it.
As a model can live or die on how well it goes together and stays that way, the process of getting there should not be overly complex or frustrating.
I've built hundreds of miniatures from all manner of materials and can honestly say that there is nothing more irritating than a poorly thought out kit with obvious design flaws.
Final Score & Comments (Score out of 5)
The final score will be derived from the four main sections along with my comments, summarising the kit's pros and cons as well as whether I think it's worth picking up.
